Cisco Earnings Fall Flat

Shares of Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) declined Thursday, a day after the company reported flat sales for the first quarter of fiscal year 2009 and projected a revenue drop for the second quarter, which ends in January. CEO John Chambers, normally an optimistic guy, called the upcoming months “the second most difficult time in my career […]

Level 3 Loses $120 Million in 3Q

Level 3 Communications Inc. (LVLT) still is losing money, but at least not as much as Wall Street had feared. The Colorado carrier on Thursday reported $120 million in losses during the third-quarter, compared to losses of $174 million a year earlier. Sales, however, improved only slightly. Level 3 reported $1.07 billion in revenue; it had […]

AT&T Boosts 3Q Profits Slightly

Some good news at last? AT&T Inc. (T) today reported a 5.5 percent rise in profit during the third quarter of 2008. Analysts and other experts have been saying AT&T and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) results would serve as a bellwether for the entire telecom industry – whether it sinks or swims, as it were. Despite the […]

Dow, S&P Suffer Worst-Ever Week

Got that Friday night beer ready? You might want a few swigs before you keep reading. But heck, you probably already know: The Dow Industrials and S&P 500 suffered their worst week ever (no VH1 comedy show here) at the closing bell Oct. 10. On the positive side, a quick glance at about a dozen […]

Techs Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

It’s no kids’ book with a soothing conclusion: The stock market took its seventh consecutive round of losses on Thursday and who knows how this story will end. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 8,582.13, marking its lowest closing point in more than five years, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped under 1,700 points – […]

Telco, Tech Stocks Keep Falling

Most telecom and other technology stocks continued to slide on Wednesday, but the losses weren’t as substantial as Tuesday’s. AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) each lost a little more than 2 percent of their values. Sprint (S) may have taken the hardest hit of the big phone companies, dropping more than 8 percent. Google (GOOG) […]

Nortel, Qwest Lead Tuesday’s Telecom Stock Plunge

Telecom stocks tumbled along with the rest of the market Tuesday, as the Dow closed down more than 500 points. Nortel (NT) lost 11 percent of its value, as did Qwest (Q). Ericsson (ERIC) dropped 10 percent. Nokia (NOK) was among the few that escaped the day unscathed. Shares of Nokia broke even.

Pickering: Not Proud of GOP Treatment of Telecom Policy

Rep. Chip Pickering, R-Miss., delivered an uncharacteristically un-Republican rebuke of the Bush administration’s penchant for telecom deregulation on Monday at the Fall 2008 COMPTEL PLUS Convention & Expo in Orlando, Fla. “I would grieve over all this work … to have two companies left standing,” said Pickering, who helped create the 1996 Telecom Act. Pickering, […]

Mondays Telecom Stocks Freefallin

Can’t help but hear Tom Petty when we watch the stock market these days. And on Monday morning, the only tune in our heads was “Free Fallin’.” On the first business day after President Bush signed the $700 billion Wall Street bailout bill, the Dow industrials had fallen below the 10,000 mark and the Nasdaq […]
