Critics Bash Lifeline Phone Program as Government Waste

AT&T is among a number of broadband companies and organizations that are seeking to overturn the Internet regulations in federal court.
Several others in the Internet ecosystem also have thrown their weight behind the FCC including Netflix, Tumblr and Vimeo.
The FCC said state and federal authorities have obtained $353 million in penalties and restitution against the four largest U.S. wireless providers.
FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said Comcast’s decision to drop its bid for Time Warner Cable was in consumers’ best interests.
Comcast said there is no basis for a lawsuit to block the transaction because the deal “will result in significant consumer benefits – faster broadband speeds, access to a superior video experience, and more competition in business services resulting in billions of dollars of cost savings.”
The bill was introduced a little more than a week after the FCC announced a record $25 million settlement with AT&T Services to resolve a probe into violations of consumer privacy at call centers in Colombia, Mexico and the Philippines.
Mike Florio of the California Public Utilities Commission cited the possibility that the merger could hurt competitive phone providers that currently purchase wholesale access from Time Warner Cable.
