Of the 39,000 workers set to strike, about 29,000 are members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), and about 10,000 are with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
The new four-year agreement now goes to CWA bargaining unit members for ratification votes.
While finally getting a deal done is a big relief to many Verizon employees, their union representatives and the company, the new contract isn’t sitting well with some workers who are concerned they are slowly giving away their rights.
Verizon Communications and a pair of unions have a tentative agreement that establishes new, three-year contracts for 43,000 wireline workers in the eastern U.S.
Everything seemed to be heading in the right direction when leaders from both sides came to a tentative agreement in May.
The agreement extends a contract for one year that was slated to expire on June 23. Workers will get a salary bump of 1 percent.
A Verizon spokesman acknowledged service disruptions in the wake of Hurricane Irene but denied that the company is foregoing overtime.
Workers represented by two unions returned to their jobs on Tuesday, Aug. 23, without new collective bargaining agreements and are working under the terms of a contract that expired on Aug. 6.
The two sides say they made progress hashing out a number of regional and local issues, enough to take employees off the picket lines and put them back to work starting Monday night. But not all picketers are impressed.
A Verizon spokesman characterized the union’s allegations as baseless” and “shameful,” saying most of the men and women filling in for striking workers have at least 100 hours of training for various jobs.
