Wholesaler Puts Network Expansion On Fast Track

Global Crossing Ltd. wants to help carriers more quickly extend their networks - not just their reaches, but their service features - with a new portfolio of wholesale services it announced in October. Global Crossing’s Fast-Track Services offer wholesale customers the ability to deliver uniform services across both their own and the Global Crossing networks, matching their offers feature for feature, including SLAs.

Services that can be extended under the program include IP VPN, dedicated Internet access, ATM, frame relay and private-line network services.

The basis for Global Crossing’s Fast-Track Services is Interprovider MPLS (iMPLS), says Sian Cameron, senior director of product management for Global Crossing. iMPLS allows for an MPLS-based, network-tonetwork interface to extend the reach of an IP VPN service. “Most carrier interconnections are done with framerelay emulation,” says Cameron. “But if you want seamless QoS from your core to us, you need MPLSbased interconnection.”

The iMPLS service also is offered separately as a quick way for regional carriers and even multilocation enterprises to extend IP VPN services.

Fast-Track Services include two go-tomarket options: Global Crossing Signature Services, which allow service providers to market under their own brands; and Global Crossing Alliance Services, which enable service providers to co-brand with Global Crossing. Custom solutions whereby Global Crossing provides branded customer support also are available, Cameron says.

“Another piece is the managed services aspect,” she says. The carrier, for example, offers global logistics support, including procurement, configuration, shipment, installation and break/fix, for end-user premises equipment.

Global Crossing can serve as a dedicated point of contact for sales engineering support, marketing collateral and sales tools.

Fast-Track Partners also can bond electronically to Global Crossing’s selfservice portal uCommand. Supported features include the ability to order, track and price new Fast-Track Services and manage end-user services. uCommand can be branded as part of the Fast-Track Alliance or Signature services, so that end users can use it to order services, monitor their networks, create utilization reports, establish end-user and product accounts and view monthly billing reports.

Cameron says there are nine carriers already involved in the wholesale program. Two have made commercial offers.

Allstream, a division of MTS, Canada’s third-largest communications provider, is using Fast-Track to extend its IP VPN and dedicated Internet access services for businesses. “Our agreement with Global Crossing is an important component of our worldwide IP business offering,” says John A. MacDonald, Allstream’s president. “Fast-Track Services enable us to serve our customers globally and transparently over a robust, highly secure network.”

The company declined an interview detailing what markets now are being served on the Global Crossing network.
