Utility Subsidiaries Link Networks To Provide
High-Bandwidth Services
By Liz Montalbano
Four utility affiliates in the Northeast and Midwest have interconnected their fiber
optic networks in an effort to serve rural communities with high-bandwidth, high-speed
data, voice and video communications.
An alliance between Allegheny Communications Connect Inc., Hagerstown, Md.; AEP
Communications LLC, Columbus, Ohio; First Energy Telcom Corp., Akron, Ohio; and GPU
Telecom Services, Morristown, N.J., provides greater access to advanced data, voice and
video communications services across portions of Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey,
New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
Once the linkages are complete, carriers in the region can lease DS-1, DS-3 and
synchronous optical network (SONET) services from the utility companies.
