Omnitron Introduces Next-Gen Carrier Ethernet NIDs

Omnitron Systems Technology Inc. (Booth 214) introduced the next generation of iConverter optical access network interface devices (NIDs) with scalable traffic management, fault detection and provisioning for carrier-grade Ethernet services.

The NIDs provide securely managed demarcation, QoS and Ethernet Virtual Circuits (E-Line and E-LAN). Integrated media conversion enables connectivity to a wide variety of customer equipment interfaces.

iConverter NIDs provide scalable traffic management as defined by MEF 9 and MEF 14 certifications and IEEE specifications. Traffic management includes rate limiting, 802.1p QoS functions, Ethernet virtual circuits via 802.1q Q-in-Q VLAN service tags, and Layer 2 control policy.

They also support comprehensive IEEE 802.3ah OAM fault detection and performance monitoring to improve reliability and reduce operating costs. 802.3ah OAM functions include remote loopback, fault notification and performance monitoring that notifies network operators of deterioration in network performance to isolate and resolve access link problems prior to customer outages.

Integrated SNMP and IP-less management and provisioning (via 802.3ah management extensions) provide comprehensive equipment configuration, link monitoring and fault detection. IP-less management is an encrypted management channel that enables the collective management of a large number of individual iConverter NIDs with one IP address, and provides an added level of security for the management channel that is not affected by customer traffic on the system.

iConverters can be managed with Omnitrons SNMP-based NetOutlook management software, via third-party SNMP software, or Telnet.

Carriers are faced with several challenges in meeting the growing demand for Ethernet Services, delivering carrier-grade reliability, setting a clear demarcation point between the customer and carrier networks, supporting service-level agreements, and implementing OAM to reduce operating costs, said Steve Mood, Omnitrons CTO. The OAM and provisioning capabilities of the new iConverters overcome these challenges, and at a competitive price point that also reduces capital equipment costs.

The new iConverter NIDs include the 10/100M2 100FX fiber to 10/100 UTP NIDs, the 2FXM2 100Fx fiber to 100Fx fiber NIDs, the GX/TM2 1,000X gigabit fiber to 10/100/1000 UTP NIDs, and the 2GXM2 1000X fiber to 1,000X fiber NIDs.
