Lahey Clinic Chooses Ascendent Systems to Improve Communications and Response Times Across Campuses

Ascendent Systems, a subsidiary of Research In Motion and a provider of enterprise voice mobility solutions, recently announced the deployment of the Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington and Peabody, Mass.

Ascendents voice mobility solution was integrated into the hospitals existing telephone infrastructure to deliver instant access to wireless phones used throughout the hospitals. The technology enables physicians, nurses and hospital staff to be reached anywhere, at any time.

Client

Lahey Clinic is a physician-led, nonprofit group practice, and is world-renowned for innovative technology, pioneering medical treatment and leading-edge research. A teaching hospital affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine, the Clinic provides quality health care in virtually every specialty and subspecialty, from primary care to cancer diagnosis and treatment to kidney and liver transplantation.

Lahey Clinic in Burlington is a 317-bed hospital, which includes an ambulatory care center serving more than 3,000 patients per day. Lahey Clinic North Shore, in Peabody, is a 10-bed facility serving more than 800 outpatients each day. Both centers feature 24-hour emergency departments. The American College of Surgeons verified Level II Trauma Center is based at the Burlington facility.

Problem

Lahey Clinics staff was using either overhead paging or calling multiple phone numbers on bulky portable phones in order to connect the correct doctor with a specific patient. Nurses and doctors often played phone/page tag. Lahey Clinic was looking for a solution that eliminated time spent searching for contacts, as well as increased the speed of patient aid and overall hospital communications, all the while creating a quieter atmosphere to aid in patient comfort during recovery.

Solution

The Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite is a feature-rich solution that provides single-number reachability, consolidation and access to a single voicemail box. It extends desk phone functionality, such as PBX dial tone, call transfer, hold, four- or five-digit dialing and conference calling capabilities, to mobile users. The Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite provides a consistent experience across a mix of telephony systems and simplifies the migration to newer IP PBX systems.

Lahey used the Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite in conjunction with its Sprint Nextel mobile phone deployment. With more than 400 full-time nurses employed at Laheys Burlington and Peabody campuses, the Ascendent system now provides those nurses with mobile extensions tied into the hospital phone system. This means staff can be reached on their Sprint Nextel mobile phones and take advantage of the corporate phone system which includes four-digit dialing and call transfer across both campuses.

This system also creates a calmer, quieter hospital environment by eliminating the need for overhead paging. In addition, response time can be accelerated as staff uses mobile phones to expedite communications and eliminate time spent searching for a particular nurse.
