NBC’s Peacock Spreads its Reach

It won’t get the laughs of "Will & Grace" or "Frasier,"
nor will it evoke the drama of "The West Wing," but NBC believes its
latest venture will be satisfying.

NBC Internet Inc. (NBCi, www.nbci.com) has
introduced a consumer Internet portal service, which it calls "Your
Personal Agent on the Web."

The portal showcases top content and services from NBC properties, including
NBC, MSNBC and CNBC, as well as consumer goods–including telecom products and
services from a limited roster of switches and routers to a growing supply of
more consumer-oriented products.

The late September launch was supported by a major TV network campaign, which
began during NBC’s 2000 Olympic Games broadcasts. Continued support comes from
web advertising and in-show promotions.

"For the first time, all of our functionality and content are in a
single, consumer-friendly, integrated offering," according to NBCi CEO Will
Lansing.

The distribution strategy complements NBCi’s roster of major ISPs, telcos,
computer companies, computer hardware manufacturers and others currently
distributing NBCi services.

As the service grows, NBCi expects to offer value-added extras to enhance the
interaction of available content with its marketing partners. Most of these will
involve smarter use of capacity allowing users to personalize how they use the
site.

Users clicking on the Personal Agent "To Go" Service can access
relevant Internet content and commerce services across all desktop and Internet
applications. This service is built atop a patented technology NBCi acquired
earlier this year when it bought flyswat Inc.

Making use of the site more fun than most is the ability to download any of
the products within the NBC family, which may include information from your
favorite network program.
