Case Study: Pace International Saves Thousands Per Year With MegaPath Hosted VoIP

Seattle-based Pace International develops and markets products that help preserve fruit and vegetable quality post-harvest, when crops are making their ways to markets around the world. With corporate headquarters in Seattle, the company needed a more cost-effective and efficient way to maintain contact with its 100 employees, who are spread across two plants in Washington and California, as well as 11 warehouses around the United States and eight international offices.

The Challenge

With each of its sites deploying and managing its own trunk-based PBX, Pace International needed to streamline and minimize its system maintenance and administrative loads. The company was incurring high monthly costs for system upkeep, employing a tech person at each site to maintain the equipment. However, the company could not sacrifice key communications features. With operations as far away as Chile, Pace needed a communications platform that would allow employees to function as if they were all located in the same office. Conference calling was a primary issue, as expensive international long-distance charges hindered effective communications. In short, Pace International needed to improve communications while reducing costs.

The Solution

Pace International turned to managed services LEC MegaPath Inc. for hosted VoIP. The food-preserver company was drawn to MegaPaths privately managed MPLS network, which provides redundancy and voice quality of service; Pace also liked MegaPaths around-the-clock customer support.

MegaPath retired the old PBXs at each location and installed hosted Voice, and new IP-enabled phones, throughout all of Pace Internationals offices. This eliminated the need for on-site support. Hosted VoIP also allows Pace to take advantage of multiple features and add new ones to the system as they are introduced.

The Results

Pace International says it now is realizing the time and cost savings it needed. For example, Pace says it now saves 10-20 percent of IT workers time each month because it doesnt have to maintain a legacy phone system. Tasks such as changing extensions and passwords, which used to consume 30 minutes or more, now take less than five minutes because IT employees can easily manage passwords and moves/adds/changes through a Web portal.

Pace International also is making use of key hosted VoIP features including four-digit dialing among sites; find me/follow me; auto-attendant for call routing; and integration with Microsoft Outlook. This advanced functionality not only eliminates long-distance charges, but lets the company simplify and improve communications within the office, across the country and internationally. For example, using one of MegaPath calling plans, Pace makes unlimited daily conference calls among corporate headquarters, plants and warehouses. Pace estimates it will save $65,000 per year in long-distance costs, conference calling and phone system connectivity expenses. Overall, that should slash the companys annual communications costs by at least 25 percent.
