WinStar Expands Fiber Capacity Through MetroMedia
New York-based WinStar Communications Inc. has entered into an agreement with
MetroMedia Fiber Network, White Plains, N.Y., to obtain dark fiber capacity in 38 major
markets in the United States and three major international markets. The broadband
communications provider will pay about $300 million over 20 years beginning upon delivery
of the dark fiber.
The deal expands WinStar’s presence in U.S. local markets including Atlanta, Boston,
Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles and Seattle, and overseas in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands; Cologne, Germany; and London. This fiber expansion gives WinStar dark fiber
rings in 50 of 60 U.S. markets it plans to roll out services. In Europe, WinStar either
already serves or has obtained licenses to serve the markets where it is buying dark
fiber, and the agreement includes dark fiber on MetroMedia Fiber Network’s German ring,
which provides intercity connectivity between major markets in that country.
