Rhythms Teams With Level 3
to Market IP Broadband Services
By Khali Henderson
Rhythms NetConnections Inc. (www.rhythms.com)
has allied with Level 3 Communications Inc. (www.level3.com)
to market “any-distance” bundled IP services, featuring high-speed local and long-distance network connectivity and usage-based bandwidth pricing.
The agreement is part of Rhythms’ overall strategy to develop strategic partnerships that enable the emerging Internet content, applications and service industries.
“This move by Rhythms is a signal that the company has aspirations above and beyond metropolitan area wholesale broadband access,” say analysts from Current Analysis Inc.
According to the agreement’s terms, Rhythms will connect its high-speed IP-capable network to Level 3’s fiber optic “gateway” facilities in 27 U.S. cities.
As a result, both companies will take advantage of Level 3’s application hosting capabilities, customer base and IP network capacity.
Rhythms and Level 3 will cobrand the service as a new product and offer it to emerging broadband service providers–such as application service providers (ASPs) and Internet service providers (ISPs).
These emerging providers will be able to choose the speed of their backbone Internet connection in a “pay-for-what-you-need” pricing structure.
