Using artificial intelligence (AI), Qumulo, the provider of Qumulo File Fabric (QF2) universal scalable file system software, on Wednesday said it has boosted its software performance when used on all-flash hardware.
The new performance capabilities, which apply machine learning, target use cases in the media and entertainment industry. New machine-learning capabilities ensure that video editors can effortlessly access uncompressed 4K with hybrid storage and 6K video using all-flash NVMe storage.
“You can pretty dramatically accelerate the data transfer for applications that are common in the media and entertainment industry where you’re trying to manipulate 4K video in an uncompressed manner,” Peter Zaballos, chief marketing officer at Qumulo, told us.
According to IDC, the total All Flash Array (AFA) market generated $2.1 billion in revenue during the quarter, up nearly 55 percent year over year. The Hybrid Flash Array (HFA) market was worth $2.5 billion, up almost percent from the first quarter of 2017.
The new performance capabilities liberate film and video production studios from the limitations of legacy storage networks. With such high-performance centralized uncompressed 4K and 6K video playback solutions, studios can eliminate costly SANs, client-side software, HBAs, and fibre channel switches and cabling, allowing Qumulo to enable the transition to 100 percent Ethernet environments with all-flash storage. This increases the number of editors that can be supported, while fostering more effective collaboration and decreasing overall costs, the vendor noted.
Qumulo is out to change the perception of the performance of storage as being tied to the hardware that customers purchase to what kind of software they run in the data center.
“We have the opportunity to build an intelligent software product that leverages all the modern advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence and bring those sorts of generational breakthroughs to the storage industry,” said Grant Gumina, product manager, at Qumulo.
The new performance-improvement features are available across all product lines and include:
Existing Qumulo subscriptions will include the new performance improvements at no additional charge and all existing QC104, QC208 and QC260 systems.
