VMware Product Reveals Include Team-Ups with AWS, HP



VMWARE VMWORLD — It’s a busy day at VMWorld as witnessed by all the news announcements by VMware and vendor partners.

Here’s a roundup of today’s VMware news that includes: the availability of VMware Cloud on AWS; expanded products and services for VMware Cloud; new software to help modernize data centers; VMware AppDefense; and VMware Workspace ONE on HP’s Device-as-a-service-platform. In a joint announcement, VMware and Amazon Web Services (AWS) stated that VMware’s SDDC will be available on the AWS Cloud. This will allow customers to run applications across operationally consistent VMware vSphere-based private, public, and hybrid cloud environments with optimized access to AWS services, VMware said.. VMware Cloud on AWS is powered by VMware Cloud Foundation, and is delivered, sold and supported by VMware as an on-demand, scalable cloud service.

“VMware and AWS are empowering enterprise IT and operations teams to add value to their businesses through the combination of VMware enterprise capabilities and the breadth and depth of capabilities and scale of the AWS Cloud, providing them a platform for any application,” said Pat Gelsinger, chief executive officer, VMware. “VMware Cloud on AWS gives customers a seamlessly integrated hybrid cloud that delivers the same architecture, capabilities and operational experience across both their vSphere-based on-premises environment and AWS,” he added.

Initial availability is in the AWS US West (Oregon) region and will expand to regions worldwide in 2018.

News of the vendor partnership and anticipated availability of VMware Cloud on AWS was initially made last October.

VMware also announced an expanded set of products and services as part of VMware Cloud that are available through the company and its partners:

  • New VMware Cloud Services that enable end-to-end visibility into cloud usage, costs and networks, with consistent networking and security across public clouds and on-premises environments.
  • New VMware Cloud Provider services and partner offerings based on VMware Cloud Foundation.
  • Expanded VMware NSX support of networking and security for clouds and cloud-native apps.
  • New VMware Cloud Provider innovations including VMware vCloud Director 9.0.
  • And, as mentioned above, VMware Cloud on AWS is now initially available in AWS U.S. West (Oregon) region.

To help customers modernize the data center, VMware made a handful of new release announcements:

  • VMware Integrated OpenStack 4 will be based on OpenStack Ocata and will boost support for containerized applications.
  • VMware vRealize Network Insights 3.5 will deliver increased monitoring and compliance capabilities for NSX.
  • New HCI Acceleration Kit to enable distributed IT with hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) systems powered by VMware vSAN.
  • VMware will embrace big data and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads with new vSphere Scale-Out edition.

To help secure applications running on virtual cloud environments, VMware announced AppDefense.
