Apple Unveils iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, Names Official Release Date

The wait soon will be over for businesses – and millions of consumers – looking to get their hands on the next iPhone.

On Wednesday, Apple introduced its new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which come with iOS 10, the “biggest release ever of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system,” the company said. The unveiling comes while Samsung is recalling and halting sales of its latest Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

Customers will be able to order the iPhone 7 (starting at $649, varies by storage) and iPhone 7 Plus (starting at $769, also varies by storage) starting Friday, with availability starting Sept. 16 in more than 25 countries, including the United States.

“iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus dramatically improve every aspect of the iPhone experience, reaching a new level of innovation and precision to make this the best iPhone we have ever made,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing. “The completely redesigned cameras shoot incredible photos and videos day or night, the A10 Fusion chip is the most powerful chip on any smartphone while delivering the best battery life ever in an iPhone, and an entirely new stereo speaker system provides twice the sound, all within the first water- and dust-resistant iPhone.”{ad}

The iPhone 7 costs the same as iPhone 6s (the 2015 model), he said. Also, Apple will upgrade the storage capacity in the iPhone 6 (the 2014 model) and iPhone 6s.

The Apple A10 Fusion chip features a new architecture that powers the iPhone 7’s innovations, making it the “most powerful chip ever in a smartphone, while also getting more time between charges with the longest battery life ever in an iPhone,” Schiller said.

The new phones feature advanced camera systems, improved power and performance, stereo speakers and wide color system from camera to display. The iPhone 7 Plus features the same 12-megapixel wide angle camera as the iPhone 7 and adds a 12-megapixel telephoto camera that together offer optical zoom and digital zoom for photos.

The iPhone 7 line is the first to not have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. In its place is a second speaker, and Apple has developed a set of EarPods with a Lightning connector that will be included with the phone. It also comes with an adapter so users can still use 3.5mm headphones with the device.

In addition, Apple has developed a new set of wireless headphones called AirPods ($159), which will be available in late October.
