Data Center Pros Worried About Manageability

Performance is not the top data storage concern for IT professionals, according to a new study.

The distinction belongs to manageability, a Tintri survey of 300 data-center professionals found. The annual State of Storage survey saw the management of virtualized infrastructure leapfrog performance and latency, which were the top two pain points of the 2015 survey.

It was a jump from 39 to 49 percent for manageability. Performance was the second biggest pain point at 46 percent, and scale was third at 42 percent.{ad}

“The storage landscape and its challenges continue to evolve. While performance remains a top challenge, IT professionals are increasingly concerned about the challenge of managing a complex virtualized infrastructure,” said Yael Zheng, chief marketing officer at Tintri. “Especially at scale – as virtualized and cloud environments expand to tens of thousands of VMs – the burden on IT to manage storage with reduced staffing, predict future growth and maintain uptime will stretch resources to a breaking point.”

Tintri's Eric BerryThe results showed the increase of virtualization. Four out of five of the respondents had at least half of their applications virtualized.

Eric Berry, Tintri’s vice president of channel operations, called the results “an important shift for the channel.”

“Selling performance alone won’t solve customers’ primary pain. Instead, channel partners need to help their customers find storage that’s far easier to use. Consider that more than half of respondents are already exploring VM-aware storage (VAS) since it requires no storage expertise and can significantly reduce operating expenses,” he said.

The survey also found that nearly seven in 10 (69 percent) respondents are looking for new technologies, with the use of legacy storage declining by 8 percent. Approximately half of the respondents said they are evaluating storage vendors.
