INRIX, a data analytics company that tracks the movement of cars and people for municipalities and businesses, has tapped Chris Handley, former group head of analytics at Vodafone, to be vice president of product management and analytics, and lead future development of INRIX’s movement analytics technology.

INRIX's Chris HandleyThis branch of big data tracks the movement of people over time from starting point to destination, helping to identify anything from sources of congestion to potential customers for sushi.

Handley’s 20 years of data analytics and development experience includes stints at AT&T Wireless, GoAhead Software and Visio. His mobile-operator experience is a logical fit in his new position, as wireless carriers generate the raw data, through handsets, connected cars and mobile network installations, that go into INRIX’s analytics tools. Operators also provide the network through which data is collected in real time.

The end goal for the INRIX-carrier collaboration is creating a wide range of applications that make use of population flow information. Logical buyers for these applications and data are city planners, event organizers, emergency services, developers, retailers and traffic and transport management agencies. In a whitepaper to mobile operators, INRIX suggests that in monetizing this rich movement data, operators can improve upon the relatively smaller revenue they may realize for simple connectivity in IoT applications, an area that many are pinning hopes on to replace lost voice revenue.
