Rackspace on Thursday unveiled its newest Private Cloud offering based on OpenStack, which provides a significant boost in terms of scalability and reliability.
The Rackspace Private Cloud powered by OpenStack now offers a 99.99 percent API uptime guarantee to customers. While not yet sufficient for an airline reservation system in the cloud or a financial exchange trading platform, the reliability guarantee offered by Rackspace is robust enough for 90 percent of customers, says Darrin Hanson, vice president of Rackspace’s private cloud initiative.
In an interview with Channel Partners, he said Rackspace’s Private Cloud is ideally suited for “revenue-driving, customer-facing” workloads that have intense demands and expectations.
The key, he added, is Rackspace’s decision to base its private cloud on the OpenStack technology platform. Rackspace, of course, was a co-creator of the OpenStack initiative and remains one of the largest driving forces behind the project. Each month, Hanson said, momentum grows and milestones are reached. When asked if the growth of OpenStack compares favorably to that of Linux a decade and a half ago, he said “yes.”
In many ways “Linux paved the way for OpenStack,” he said, giving the open-source development platform a model to follow. Research from 451 Research suggests the market for OpenStack could grow into a $3.3 billion opportunity for developers and technology integrators. Thanks to recent contributions from the community, the new Rackspace Private Cloud is better than ever, Rackspace said.
Another key to the private cloud offering is the addition of DevOps automation services for application life-cycle management.
“Unlocking the full power of a cloud requires automation,” the company said in a prepared release. “Rackspace DevOps Automation Services help customers automate their process for deploying and scaling applications by treating their infrastructure as code. In addition, Rackspace Private Cloud supports OpenStack Orchestration (Heat), which helps customers automate the provisioning of infrastructure, services and applications.”
