Toshiba’s telecom division this week released its new UCedge UC platform, which allows for interoperability between the company’s phone systems and third-party devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers.

That way, a computer or Android or Apple gadget can double as an extension of the desk phone, according to Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Telecommunication Systems Division. Users download the necessary software from the Internet.

Features include the ability to:

  • Work from anywhere as a business phone extension
  • Use one-number reach
  • Display only the office phone number in Caller ID
  • Manage office voicemails with a visual interface on a mobile device
  • Place long-distance and international calls to contacts from a cell phone at landline rates
  • Use IM
  • See the status of UCedge colleagues or Microsoft Lync Server users before calling them

UCedge works with Toshiba’s IPedge, VIPedge and Strata CIX products. It has been validated on select phones from Apple, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Sony and LG, as well as tablets from Toshiba, Apple and Samsung. Support on Windows and Mac desktops and laptops will be available as of next month.

Licenses for the UCedge client are provided as part of VIPedge, or the license is available as an option for the IPedge or Strata CIX system. The UCedge client for mobile devices is available as a download from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
