AT&T is reported to be in the running for America Movil assets on Mexico’s eastern coast that could be worth as much as $17.5 billion.
America Movil, which is majority-owned by billionaire Carlos Slim, needs to appease antitrust regulators. Bloomberg reported that Slim has contacted AT&T, Softbank – the majority owner of Sprint – and others such as Bell Canada and China Mobile about making the purchase.
America Movil has been busy with its own acquisitions. The company recently bought a majority of Telekom Austria and might make a bid for Telecom Italia’s wireless unit in Brazil.
AT&T, of course, has its hands full promoting its pending acquisition of DirecTV to shareholders and regulators. Shareholders are expected to vote on the merger on Sept. 25.
