T-Mobile is breathing down the necks of larger rivals Verizon and AT&T in some key markets.
Independent analytics firm RootMetrics has released some new stats for New York City and Austin, Texas, and Big Red and Ma Bell have some competition in the nation’s fourth-largest wireless operator (which, incidentally, is expected to soon be acquired by No. 3 Sprint).
Let’s start with New York City. RootMetrics has measured mobile performance there six times and its last test took place in November 2013. Since that time, Sprint released Sprint Spark and Verizon augmented its LTE network with AWS spectrum upgrades. Still, T-Mobile gave Verizon a run for its money: RootMetrics said Verizon and T-Mobile earned overall performance honors. Verizon recorded the fastest median download speed at 17.6 Mbps, and T-Mobile recorded the fastest median upload speed at 12.2 Mbps.
Meantime, Verizon and AT&T are the top-performing mobile networks in Austin, RootMetrics said after recent tests of AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon in the Lone Star State’s capital city.
In terms of overall performance, which measures both performance and consumer experience, Verizon came in at 97.7 percent, T-Mobile at 97.5 percent, AT&T at 95.2 percent and Sprint at 86.9 percent.
But in terms of network reliability, AT&T and Verizon tied. T-Mobile, meanwhile, posted the fastest download and upload speeds. All four carriers scored above 93.
“We also found fast data speeds, but speed doesn’t mean much if you can’t reliably connect to your network,” said Bill Moore, CEO of RootMetrics. “Consumers in the Austin area have multiple options for choosing a carrier with both reliability and speed.”
The news marks the first time since October 2011 that Verizon has won or shared the RootMetrics Overall RootScore Award. AT&T otherwise has taken the honors.
In Austin, RootMetrics conducted 25,593 call, data, and text tests around the clock, indoors and outdoors, from May 29 to June 4.
