All the cool kids are doing it – implementing Voice over LTE, that is.
AT&T goes live tomorrow, Verizon Wireless is planning its launch, and now T-Mobile USA says it has unleashed VoLTE in Seattle on three devices: the LG G Flex, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Light.
Like going from standard-definition to HDTV, IP-powered VoLTE provides voice quality that is much clearer than traditional wireless service. Users also get access to LTE data speeds while on phone calls. VoLTE requires handsets designed with that standard.
T-Mobile said it plans to expand its VoLTE coverage throughout the country over the coming year. The operator gained VoLTE technology with its 2013 MetroPCS purchase.
The other large wireless carrier in the United States, Sprint, has said it’s in no rush to deploy VoLTE.
