Music, Games Driving Growth of Cloud Services

The number of unique customers accessing cloud-based services is expected to exceed 3.6 billion by 2018, increasing 150 percent from an estimated 2.4 billion in 2013.

Over the next five years, consumer demand will be driven by an expanding collection of connected services within cloud-based storage, music and games, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

Specifically, music streaming services such as Spotify are capturing a significant portion of revenue due to their offered access to extensive music catalogs exceeding the storage limits of mobile devices. But many of those companies struggle to turn a profit, especially as they attempt to find a balance between premium pricing and basic free services.

The cloud games market is also seeing success after the relaunch of OnLive and the market entry of PlayStation, but this market may see limitations in the future due to the games more or less being streamed from the cloud, Juniper said.
