Today marks the last day on the job for more than 1,500 customer service reps working for Sprint.
That’s because the service provider is cutting hundreds of call center jobs around the country as part of the layoffs it said in January it would start enforcing.
A number of regional media outlets last week reported on the losses, ranging from about 150 positions each in Temple, Texas, and Elmsford, N.Y., to 400 in Altamonte Springs, Fla., and another 450 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Other affected cities include Sprint headquarters in Overland Park, Kan., with 200 job cuts, and about 250 more in Sacramento, Calif.
The total comes to 1,550 customer service jobs, according to reports. Workers were told last week they will be paid through April 8 and, based on how long they have been with Sprint, may be eligible for additional pay and benefits.
Sprint said in January it is trying to reduce costs “and better meet the changing dynamics of the marketplace.” Sprint is the third-largest wireless operator in the United States and faces stiff competition from No. 1 Verizon Wireless and No. 2 AT&T.
