T-Mobile issued a satirical press release this week attacking AT&T for a new promotion that offers T-Mobile customers up to $450 to switch providers.
“T-Mobile US, Inc. today announced that pretty much everyone at the company is overcome with emotion and still kind of processing the decision by now-ex-rival AT&T to leave the dark side, step into the light, and join hands in supporting the Un-carrier consumer revolution,” the release said, according to The Verge.
It also contains fictional quotes from AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega claiming that the program encourages current AT&T customers to try T-Mobile.
“If for any reason you dont love T-Mobiles 4G LTE network, which is now faster than ours, well actually pay you up to $450 to come back to AT&T, I kid you not,” de la Vega is jokingly quoted as saying.
This ploy is in line with T-Mobile CEO John Legere’s typical aggressive remarks toward his competition on Twitter, but the “official” press release reads more like an article from The Onion. And T-Mobile doesn’t hide the fact that the quotes are completely fabricated.
Regardless of what the other carriers think, T-Mobile’s “uncarrier” strategy is at least getting consumers’ attention. In the fourth quarter, the company added more than 850,000 new customers, compared to AT&T’s 550,000. But with more than 100 million customers, AT&T still has more than double that of T-Mobile.
The Magenta Network did away with postpaid contracts for new customers last year. Both companies have aggressively been pursuing each others’ customers so far this year with promises to pay them to switch.
