iPhone 5s, Apple Users Overall, Greediest When It Comes to Data

Users of the iPhone 5s consume more data than any other smartphone owners, according to a JDSU report quoted in the L.A. Times.

For 2013, JDSU found that iPhone 5s users consume seven times as much data as users of the iPhone 3G, the study’s benchmark. The gap between the two phones’ data usage is even greater in developing markets, where iPhone 5s users demand up to 20 times more data than iPhone 3G users.

Apple accounted for six products out of the top 10 devices. Two of the top 10 devices came from Samsung, one from HTC and the other from Sony. Moreover, an Apple device has taken the title of using the most data four years in a row.

"Each new generation of iPhone has resulted in increases in data consumption of between 20 percent to 40 percent — even today when data use is common," report author Michael Flanagan said.

But HTC Sensation users took the top spot for uploading data in developed markets with eight times as much data as iPhone 3G users. The Samsung Galaxy S4 uploaded the most data in developing markets, with 11 times as much as iPhone 3G users.

The study also found that 0.1 percent of 4G users consume more than half of all data downloaded from LTE networks. In other words, when it comes to data usage, casual 4G users are greatly outpaced by the most extreme users.
