It’s probably 10 months away from going on sale, but the iPhone 6 might just answer the call of Apple’s customers for a bigger screen than is available on its existing models.
Apple’s next flagship handset, which sports a 4.9-inch display, is reportedly undergoing “field testing.” That’s according to C Technology, a Chinese blog spotted by Apple Insider, which the site acknowledges can be a little hit-or-miss with its speculation. Nonetheless, this isn’t the first report of a larger display for the next iPhone. One recent report predicts two new iPhones in 2014 that are significantly larger than the 5s; however, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks it’s unlikely Apple will build anything with a display larger than five inches.
Other potential specifications for the next iPhone are clearly speculative at this point, but fans of the company’s products will no doubt have something to look forward to. There’s a good chance that there will be significant design overhaul considering the fact that Apple has resorted to only minor upgrades in odd years (2011, 2013) as of late.
Apple unveiled two iPhones at once for the first time this year. Many analysts felt that the move which included the flagship 5s and the less-expensive 5c was necessary in order for the company to better compete with rivals who have multiple handsets on the market; yet, recent reports indicate that the 5s isn’t selling as well as hoped.
Screen size is another area where Apple has been criticized. The four-inch screen on the iPhone 5s is smaller than most smartphones that archrival Samsung and others have made available.
While the iPhone is still the best-selling smartphone on the planet, Samsung is far and away the leader in market share due to its slew of devices. One, the Galaxy S4, has become the Korean giant’s hottest device, and in some circles has been called an “iPhone killer.”
