The service, which should be available in the first half of 2014, will use the NetBond cloud integration technology from AT&T to pair its MPLS-based virtual private networking with the Windows Azure cloud platform. AT&T said that will result in greater security protections, and provide as much as 50 percent lower latency than the public Internet, with access to cloud resources from any site using almost any device.

Satya Nadella, executive vice president of cloud and enterprise for Microsoft, agreed. The alliance with AT&T reduces barriers to entry for cloud computing, Nadella said, and is expected to increase Windows Azure adoption.
