As research firm IDC predicts the worldwide file- and object-based storage market to hit $38 billion in 2017, up from $23 billion this year, wholesale IaaS provider Artisan Infrastructure has added object-based cloud storage to its portfolio.

Object-based cloud storage is built with simpler hierarchies than standard file storage, and uses metadata for unique identifiers rather than file names. As IDC noted in its August 2013 report, “Outside the data center, storage traffic is undergoing a dramatic shift as the growth of mobile, social and cloud is heavily tilted toward the use of IP-based connectivity mechanisms for consuming storage resources.”

In tandem with its object-based cloud storage launch, Artisan is touting its pricing: MSPs, VARs, ISVs and other channel partners that build and deploy their own cloud platforms can get their hands on Artisan’s object-based cloud storage for less than 3 cents per gigabyte. Artisan CEO Brian Hierholzer said the .029 price amounts to 70 percent less than what Rackspace, a retail cloud vendor, charges.

“We see more efficiencies because we’re a wholesaler,” he said.

And while Artisan has not announced its download, or retrieval, costs, Hierholzer said to expect “the same type of disruptive price point.”

Partners wanting to try Artisan’s object-based cloud storage may beta test it for free, on an unlimited basis, for the next 60 days.

“We work with partners to streamline their businesses as they develop and build their own businesses without having to fund their competitors,” said Hierholzer, citing companies including Amazon Web Services and Rackspace as examples. “Our new cloud storage option gives partners the opportunity to extend their portfolios in one of the fastest-growing segments of the market.”

General availability is set for Oct. 15.
