Desktone Inc. announced this week that it extended its cloud-hosted virtual desktop platform with a new on-premises managed virtual desktop solution. The new offering pairs hardware at a customer site with remote management by a cloud provider.
The new offering is available immediately from authorized Desktone service providers, such as Dell, Fujitsu, NEC, Time Warner Cable and Dimension Data.
Desktones on-premises, cloud-managed virtual desktop solution enables cloud service providers to deploy virtual desktops in the customers data center and remotely mange provisioning and ongoing management.
Desktones platform offers multitenancy and multi-data center capabilities, so service providers can manage virtual desktops securely for multiple customers using a single platform. At the same time, the customer IT department can add, remove and edit their virtual desktops across locations.
“With the recent rise of public cloud hosted virtual desktops, businesses have had a hard time choosing whether to adopt virtual desktops as a service or on-premises,” said Brett Waldman, Research Manager, IDC Client Virtualization Software, in a press statement. “Depending on the use case, one model may be more appropriate than the other. However, a hybrid approach like Desktone’s allows companies to deploy desktops in a way that makes most sense for a particular set of users, while leaving time-consuming infrastructure management to their service provider.”
The new on-premises offerings include both enterprise and SMB/branch office configurations. Enterprise customers can use their existing private cloud IaaS environments or use the Desktone blueprint, which includes a choice of server hardware, NetApp or EMC storage, and desktop virtualization software. SMBs and branch offices can deploy a pre-configured virtual desktop appliance, which includes virtual storage, as well as compute and desktop virtualization software.
The virtual storage is provided as a result of a new strategic partnership between Desktone and Greenbytes Inc., a developer of IO-Offload solutions. Desktop has paired its DaaS platform with GreenBytes vIO virtual storage appliance, which uses patented zero-latency inline deduplication technology to sends only unique data to the storage system, to reduce the amount of data stored, boosting performance of virtual desktops.
