A series of leaked screenshots show that Samsung’s new Galaxy S IV phone not expected to be unveiled until March 14 is likely to include functionality that works by responding to the user’s eyes and head motions.

A set of screenshots published by SamMobile.com and screenshots of the U.S. version of the device shown on the GSM Israel tech blog show a “Smart Scroll” feature that allows users to scroll through screens as their eyes reach the bottom of the screen and “Smart Pause,” which pauses multimedia in play when the user’s head turns away.

According to a New York Times report, in January, Samsung filed for a trademark in Europe for the name “Eye Scroll” and in February filed for a trademark for “Samsung Eye Scroll” in the U.S. In the trademark application for the latter service, Samsung described it as “Computer application software having a feature of sensing eye movements and scrolling displays of mobile devices, namely, mobile phones, smartphones and tablet computers according to eye movements; digital cameras; mobile telephones; smartphones; tablet computers.” Samsung also filed for a trademark on “Eye Pause,” but no description of the feature was included.

Initial reports indicate that the hot features of the Galaxy S IV will be in the software, not hardware. The anticipated eye-activated features would seem to be a logical next step for Samsung whose current flagship phone, Galaxy S III, has a Smart Stay feature that utilizes a front-facing camera to monitor the user and keep the screen from automatically going to sleep when it is being looked at.
