AT&T and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) have put together a tentative contract agreement that covers more than 20,000 wireless employees in three dozen states and the District of Columbia.
It’s a four-year agreement for union workers primarily in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Mountain region and West Coast. The carrier isn’t releasing details until the terms of the contract have been presented to union members by their leadership. Expect a ratification vote in the coming days. The agreement covers pension, wages, disability and work rules. Health care and other benefits are bargained separately those were ratified in October for AT&T Mobility employees nationwide.
This negotiation appears to have gone more smoothly than those for AT&T’s wireline workers. They have become heated in some regions as employees have been asked to increase contributions to their health-care benefits. Major carriers like AT&T have begun to shift some resources to the wireless side as more and more people buy cellphones and drop their home-phone service.
