Smartphone users who’ve taken a liking to some of the big-screen smartphones released by Samsung and others will have to wait at least a year before Apple delivers such a device a phone many industry insiders are dubbing the iPhone 6.
The Silicon Valley giant had first planned to unveil a 4.8-inch iPhone 6 in or around October of this year, but the technology the company uses in its phones is making it challenge for Apple’s screen suppliers to go from the current 4-inch model (iPhone 5) to 4.8 inches. That’s according to Peter Misek, an analyst with Jefferies, who this week said the delays will push the launch to sometime in 2014, Business Insider reported.
The analyst says the iPhone 6 will come with a much bigger, faster processor that will require a new version of iOS, something that Apple usually delivers annually anyway.
A pair of new phones are still coming from Apple this year, however, Misek predicts: the rumored low-cost iPhone that Apple itself has pooh-poohed; and the much-anticipated iPhone 5S, an upgraded, but not fully overhauled version of the iPhone 5, which made its debut in September. Look for those new phones in June, he says.
Apple has been coy about a larger screen, but Misek thinks that’s because the company worries people won’t continue to buy iPhone 5s if they know a 4.8-inch version is pending.
Meantime, we might have had our first look at the 5S this week. A Chinese tech site showed off images of what it says is the new phone, already in production making a summer release date seem very possible.
