SoftBank Telecom Corp., the Japan-based telecom provider that wants to buy 70 percent of Sprint Nextel Corp., is licensing 8×8’s Zerigo cloud software for at least three years.
SoftBank will offer 8×8’s subscription-based, enterprise cloud software to enterprises, and will develop some of its own software so it can also provide virtual desktop interface services. That way, SoftBank can provision a range of virtualized cloud services, using Vblock products from VCE, the company said.
SoftBank at first will sell 8×8’s platform and the virtual desktop addition in Japan. After that, it plans to roll out coverage to the rest of Asia, as well as to Europe, the United States and other major world markets. 8×8 will earn development and installation fees, and get payments from licensing over the initial 36-month contract.
SoftBank is pleased to partner with such a nimble, Silicon Valley company whose culture mirrors our own and whose experience in delivering cloud services will be invaluable in helping us to rapidly deploy similar services in Japan," said Ken Miyauchi, SoftBank’s board director.
