for our list of December’s hottest selling smartphones to see how phones from Nokia and Samsung fared against the competition.**
The next several months promise to be exciting ones for smartphone-philes with increasingly powerful and functional devices coming from Samsung, Nokia, HTC and others, not to mention rumors about more than one new iPhone from Apple.
Verizon’s lineup is expected to include a version of Nokia’s flagship Lumia 920, which the manufacturer markets to both the general consumer and the business user. The 920, an AT&T exclusive since its launch last fall, has cracked the carrier’s top three bestseller list the past two months, trailing only the iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S III. The Verizon Lumia carries the codename “Laser,” The Verge reported. The tech site’s sources said the Laser will get a big marketing push from Microsoft, whose Windows Phone 8 operating system is on all Nokia Lumia smartphones. No release date to offer just yet.
This is significant for both the carrier and the Finland-based phone maker when Verizon started selling the Lumia 822 in November, it was the first new Nokia phone from the wireless giant in three years.
Like the typical conclusion to any TV drama series, with new life always comes death. It was just a little more than a year ago when the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the buzz of the high-tech gadget universe. Launching in December 2011, it was one of Verizon’s first LTE smartphones, and the first device in the U.S. to run on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). Android Community reported this week that the Galaxy Nexus is one of a handful of now “classic” phones that Verizon will no longer sell online or in retail outlets.
These days, if your device is more than a few months old, it’s not only out of date, but your carrier might replace it entirely. Software updates for the Galaxy Nexus, however, will continue.
