Pacnet Plans 100GBps Optical Transport

Asia-Pacific carrier Pacnet plans to deploy an optical mesh network that will accommodate soaring data capacity demands throughout Asia.

The new backbone will combine subsea fiber infrastructure and terrestrial backhaul links to support pure packet technology in the optical core. Expect 100GBps technology, required by many enterprises, and optical transport network switching, in addition to the existing Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy. The upgrades are slated to start early this year.

The news should resonate with domestic agents whose clients require connectivity in Pacnet’s overseas territory. Cardi Prinzi, president of Pacnet’s enterprise markets division, said agents in the United States will be able to sell the services, which will include expanded virtual private line capabilities. That comes as Prinzi beefs up Pacnet’s partner program. The goal, he said, is to “help agents and their customers with needs in Asia-Pacific including China and India.”

Prinzi could not provide more details about the partner program yet but did say Pacnet just completed its new agent contract and has hired a couple of channel managers. The company will release more information soon.
