America’s economic turnaround might be progressing slowly, but 500 people in Tulsa, Okla., are about to get a job.
Verizon announced that it will expand a facility in Oklahoma’s second-largest city and set up a financial services hub. The 500 new positions are all "high-paying" jobs, company officials told onlookers at an event Friday morning, Fox 23 reported. It’s one of the biggest job-creation announcements there in a long time, the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce said.
The telecommunications business around the world certainly hasn’t been immune to job cuts over the past few years as the economy suffered through a recession and a slow recovery. In addition, as fewer people dump their landlines in favor of cellphones, many employees have found themselves either displaced or out of work entirely. That being said, companies like Verizon have been able to increase the number of staffers who work on the wireless and high-speed Internet/TV sides of the business as those have expanded.
Verizon’s Tulsa office, which is already home to 900 workers, will now handle accounting and other financial functions.
