With an increase in denial-of-service attacks comes a spike in the market for those who provide services aimed to stop the perpetrators.
Infonetics Research predicts global DDoS (distributed denial of service) prevention appliance revenue to reach $272 million in 2012, up 29 percent from last year. That’s just one stat from a new report, which predicts the overall market to top $485 million in 2016.
“With mobile-security attacks mushrooming at the same time that mobile operators are upgrading their networks to deliver 3G and 4G services and handl[ing] booming broadband data demand, operators are being forced to add new layers of network protection and to increase their security processing capacity,” noted Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at Infonetics Research. “Mobile backhaul networks alone are adding orders of magnitude more capacity. These trends are pushing revenue for DDoS prevention solutions in mobile networks to grow at an explosive 32 percent compound annual growth rate through 2016.”
Wilson says the data center is the second-fastest growing vertical. DDoS prevention spending will likely pass traditional carrier transport DDoS spending in 2012.
“A head-to-head battle is coming in this segment, as major security vendors build data center-specialized security platforms that integrate high-performance DDoS prevention, giving buyers an alternative to the mid-range offerings from dedicated DDoS appliance vendors.”
The report goes on to say that even though it only accounts for 6.5 percent of DDoS prevention appliance revenue in 3Q12, Latin America will have the highest growth in this sector from 2011 to 2016 as many carriers deploy their first serious DDoS mitigation solutions there.
Infonetics says Burlington, Mass.-based Arbor Networks is the largest vendor in the global DDoS prevention market.
