Avaya on Wednesday joined the trend toward video federation, which allows proprietary and consumer, Web-based video services to interoperate. Thanks to its June 2012 acquisition of Radvision, the company has added new collaboration capabilities some of which work outside the Avaya walled garden for enterprises and SMBs.
Here are the upgrades and new additions:
- Avaya Aura Conferencing with Avaya Flare Experience 1.1 now puts voice, video and Web conferencing on PCs, tablets, and smartphones, supporting up to 75,000 concurrent users.
- Scopia XT5000 room system with an embedded four- or nine-port MCU, as well as SIP integration with Avaya IP Office. The XT5000 also features an optional package for SMEs and workgroups that provides both Scopia Desktop and Scopia Mobile.
- Scopia XT Executive 240 Desktop is a new executive desktop video conferencing system with an optional embedded MCU. It features simultaneous HD live video and content-sharing using H.264 SVC and H.264 High Profile for quality, scalability and bandwidth efficiency.
- Scopia Mobile, which worked with Apple’s iPhone and iPad, expands to Android devices. It’s a free download from the Google Play and Apple App stores. Scopia Mobile enables HD video conferencing, data collaboration with review capabilities, conference call control and more.
- Scopia TIP Gateway enables three-screen support for audio, video and data-sharing in a Cisco telepresence environment. The Scopia TIP Gateway supports large enterprise customers with existing telepresence suites and rounds out Avayas interoperability with telepresence systems including those from LifeSize, Polycom, and Tandberg.
- Scopia Management System now features a browser interface for managing video collaboration from PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets. The interface incorporates Google Maps for a geographic view of participants, along with scalability of up to 400,000 users.
- Avaya Client Applications with Microsoft Lync, Outlook and Office integration uses Avaya Aura to communicate with platforms from Avaya-Radvision, LifeSize and Polycom. Avaya Client Applications is a series of plug-ins for real-time collaboration from Microsoft desktop applications such as Lync/OCS, Office, Internet Explorer and Dynamics as well as from IBM Sametime and Salesforce.com.
Avaya sells through channel partners. Wednesday’s news means it joins Polycom in allowing its video conferencing technology to work with outside platforms. However, these companies are a little late to the game; they are being challenged by cloud startups such as Vidtel and Blue Jeans Networks with business models built on the premise that video conferencing should work on all platforms, regardless of vendor. Still, that does not spell the end for the legacy video conferencing providers, and it also means greater opportunity for resellers and agents.
