Calling it “the best iPhone yet,” Consumer Reports is out with its rating for the latest version of Apple’s iconic smartphone.

Criticism has been heaped on the Silicon Valley giant for flaws in its new Maps app enough to draw an apology from CEO Tim Cook but the country’s best-known consumer-ratings group says Maps “is competent enough, even it falls short of what’s available for free on many other phones.”

Consumer Reports is bullish on the larger, four-inch display; a thinner and lighter profile; 4G LTE access; and “a host of innovative features” enough to move the iPhone 5 past the 4S and a number of other new Android-based phones in CR’s rankings.

The iPhone 5 also gets props for improvements to Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant, and for “making the already top-notch iPhone camera even better,” which it calls the second best on any phone, only behind the 41MP camera on the Nokia 808.

In the U.S., the iPhone 5 is available from AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and a handful of regional and prepaid carriers.
