Apple sold a remarkable 5 million iPhones in its first three days of release, the Silicon Valley giant announced Monday.

The company’s iconic smartphone went on sale Friday in a handful of countries, including the U.S., where AT&T, Verizon and Sprint all rolled out the device on Sept. 21. It comes to a handful of regional and prepaid carriers Sept. 28. An additional 22 nations will get the device this Friday.

Zacks Investment Research quotes a new comScore report that says AT&T is the winner among U.S. carriers selling the new iPhone, with two-thirds of pre-orders going Ma Bell’s way.

Not surprisingly, demand exceeded supply and while many pre-orders have been shipped, other customers will now have to wait until next month to get theirs. And talk about high expectations 5 million actually fell short of some analysts’ expectations.

Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Tim Cook, Apple CEO. While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyones patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”

The new iPhone is redesigned with a 4-inch Retina display, a faster processor and LTE-compatibility.

And what’s more, Apple said a whopping 100 million customers have updated their devices to iOS6, the latest version of the company’s operating system.
