Telecommunications employees are aging and that could jeopardize the sector’s future, according to research firm Janco Associates.
"We feel that there are too few younger employees with sufficient experience to fill the required leadership positions that will be needed when the employment market turns around," said Janco Associates CEO Victor Janulaitis.
Janco Associates reached its conclusions after analyzing recent government and other data.
The problem, the firm said, is that companies often eliminate newer and less-experienced employees when they encounter tough times such as the ongoing recession. The remaining workers generally are older and retirement isn’t far away for them.
"In the long run, this could be a problem as the economy turns around," Janulaitis said.
