West IP Unveils MediaCloud

West IP Communications on Friday unveiled MediaCloud, a hybrid environment for deploying Microsoft Lync throughout enterprises.

The company said MediaCloud keeps Lync infrastructure and applications in the enterprise, managed by IT staff, but puts the media, edge and federation pieces into West’s data centers.

Deploying an enterprise wide unified communications platform remains a top priority for large-scale enterprises, and Lync is the platform of choice for many,” said Jeff Wellemeyer, executive vice president and CTO at West IP Communications.

Moving Lync out of the pilot phase and into full-scale production is a huge challenge, requiring an enterprise IT group to deploy and manage complex application, network, PSTN, and federation infrastructures and services,” said Jeff Wellemeyer, executive vice president and CTO of West IP. “For many enterprises, this is a challenge beyond the capabilities and resources of their IT groups.”

Enter MediaCloud, West IP said. The product contains three key services elements:

  • Edge: Takes direct global Internet connectivity for Lync enterprise clusters into a network designed for real-time inter-carrier communications; this enhances security and end users’ quality experience.
  • Mediation: Extends RTAudio use to the service provider network so it’s delivered without transcoding; this increases network efficiency and reduces voice latency.
  • Federation: Provides public federation services associated with the enterprise Lync platform in a secure, QoS-enabled environment with peering to global Internet providers and many MPLS network service platforms; this enables connectivity to organizations, applications and services both within and external to the MediaCloud.
