AT&T workers represented by the Communications Workers of America ratified two contracts covering a total of roughly 20,500 employees, the CWA announced Friday.
CWA members at AT&T Midwest and AT&T Legacy, a nationwide unit, approved the agreements.
“In these tough times, our committee was able to get a contract that enhanced both our employment security and our standard of living,” said District 4 Vice President Linda Hinton.
The CWA represents approximately 15,000 AT&T Midwest members in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. The union also represents roughly 5,500 AT&T Legacy members.
Ralph Maly, CWA telecommunications and technologies vice president, noted that the bargaining committee secured “protections against layoffs in the first year of the contract.”
“Workers also made gains in future retirement security and economic issues,” the CWA declared.
The union noted that it remains in negotiations with AT&T over contracts that cover 18,000 workers in California and Nevada and 3,200 workers in Connecticut. Workers on both coasts earlier this month went on strike for a few days, citing unfair labor practices.
AT&T and the CWA also have reached a tentative agreement covering roughly 22,000 workers in the Southeast.
