Users Dump BlackBerrys in Alarming Numbers

As RIM struggles to stay relevant, BlackBerry trade-ins are steadily increasing.

Gazelle, a purchaser of used electronics, said that there has been an 80 percent increase in BlackBerry trade-ins over the last month, according to a report from Cult of Mac.

The high volume of trade-ins is just further evidence that both the general consumer and the business user are retiring their BlackBerrys in favor of popular competitors like Apple’s iPhone.

"Our data illustrates that BlackBerry trade-ins have risen 80 percent above the normal 30-day average since March 1 here at Gazelle,” said Anthony Scarsella, the chief gadget officer for Gazelle, in the report. Consumers could be starting to fear the end of the Canadian-based device maker … The fear of rapid depreciation and unsupported devices has consumers upgrading to other platforms quicker than ever before.”

BlackBerry is not the only phone being abandoned for the iPhone 4S, Apple’s latest model. Android trade-ins were also up, as were the number of iPhone 3G S’s as users upgraded to the iPhone 4 and 4S.

RIM has seen its market share steadily decrease over the past few years as the iPhone and a wave of Android phones have begun to dominate the smartphone wars.
