Verizon Repairman Charged with Attempted Murder After Tapping Phone

A Verizon repair technician in Florida who used his knowledge to listen in on his wife’s phone calls last Monday has been accused of strangling his spouse and faces numerous charges including attempted murder.

Polk County sheriff’s deputies said 51-year-old Robert L. Rutledge of Lakeland, Fla., disconnected a phone line after hearing a call between his wife and an unknown man and choked his wife with a rope until she passed out, The Ledger reported. He is accused of attempting to strangle his wife again after she regained consciousness, but she was able to run to a neighbor’s home for assistance, the report said, citing deputies.

Rutledge, who works as a cable splicer for Verizon, faces charges of attempted murder, obstruction of justice, interception of communication and domestic violence battery by strangulation, The Ledger reported.
