AT&T Inc. has warned its customers in an email that hackers have attempted to access their account information, but the phone giant doesn’t believe the perpetrators were successful.
Mark Siegel, an AT&T spokesman, told Bloomberg that less than 1 percent of the company’s customers were impacted, and AT&T is continuing its investigation to ascertain the source of the hacking attempt or intent of the effort to obtain the information.
AT&T noted the hackers used automated programs to try to link mobile numbers and account log-in credentials, which they then hoped to use to access customer accounts on AT&Ts website, The Associated Press reported.
“We recently detected an organized and systematic attempt to obtain information on a number of AT&T customer accounts, including yours,” Bloomberg quoted AT&T as stating in an email to customers. “We do not believe that the perpetrators of this attack obtained access to your online account or any of the information contained in that account.”
