Mobile is now the planets king of broadband.
Last year, the number of mobile broadband subscribers (558 million) surpassed the number of wireline broadband customers (500 million), Infonetics Research announced Tuesday in a report.
The number of cellular mobile broadband subscribers climbed nearly 60 percent last year and should exceed 2 billion by 2015, according to the research firm. Asia Pacific alone accounted for nearly half of all mobile subscribers last year.
Landline services are not dead, though, especially with China giving a boost to the worldwide wireline broadband base with its massive fiber-based program led by the Chinese government ,” said Infonetics Research analyst Stephane Teral.
WiMAX is one of the technologies driving growth in the wireless broadband market. Infonetics Research said the number of WiMAX subscribers grew 75 percent last year and will reach 126 million in 2015.
The report also forecasts that the number of VoIP subscribers will grow from 157 million last year to 264 million in 2015 while the number of access lines will fall to 759 million by 2015.
