A new report from Infonetics Research shows the mobile security client market is growing fast, but the reason why is nothing to cheer.
[This] market is starting to explode due to the maturation of newly acquired products at companies like Juniper, Symantec, and McAfee, and new user demand driven by an increasingly hostile threat environment,” said Jeff Wilson, Infonetics principal analyst for security. 2010 saw a massive increase in mobile OS vulnerabilities, malicious apps on major app stores, Zeus for BlackBerry, and a handful of other noteworthy threat events that have businesses and consumers on edge."
Infonetics newly released Security Client Software market share and forecast report predicts that the worldwide market for desktop and mobile security clients will top $7 billion by 2015. SaaS (security-as-a-service) is likely to eat into enterprise-class security client revenue starting this year if vendors are able to offer centrally manageable SaaS solutions that provide security and performance comparable to client-based solutions, the report said.
Mobile security client revenue jumped 58 percent worldwide in 2010 from the previous year, and by 2015, mobile security client revenue is expected to grow to about 25 percent of the total worldwide security client market, according to Infonetics.
Symantec continues to lead the desktop security client market, the report says, with more than one-third of worldwide revenue.
Agents and value-added resellers who sell IT services may want to pay particular attention to these numbers as they consider the direction they will take in the next few years.
