Verizon Wireless says it placed the first ever IMS-based Voice over LTE (Long Term Evolution) call on its commercial network.
The initial call lasted for 33 seconds.
Verizon Wireless said its technologists subsequently browsed the Internet, participated in chats and downloaded apps while talking on LG Revolution 4G smartphones during about 10 minutes of additional test calls.
About a year ago, the GSMA an organization representing the mobile industry launched the VoLTE initiative to deliver a standard way of providing voice and messaging services for Long-Term Evolution (LTE).
Verizon Wireless said it expects to offer VoLTE services on a commercial basis in 2012.
The company will showcase the VoLTE calls in its booth at GSMA Mobile World Congress next week in Barcelona, Spain.
