MetroPCS Communications is unveiling what it calls the worlds first commercially available 4G LTE-enabled Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Indulge.
The Indulge is powered by Android 2.2 and delivers lightning fast” Web page browsing, according to the carrier. It also allows customers to watch and listen to exclusive entertainment and multimedia content from their favorite shows through the MetroSTUDIO application. The phone has a combination touch screen/QWERTY keyboard, allowing customers to send messages via e-mail, SMS or social media channels two different ways.
The Galaxy Indulge provides complete access to Google Mobile services, including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube. It features a 3-megapixel camera and camcorder with auto-focus, music player, Stereo Bluetooth capabilities and expandable memory storage up to 32GB. It also includes a 4GB microSD card.
The Galaxy Indulge integrates two of Samsungs core product investments; the Android platform and bringing powerful and intuitive 4G-enabled devices to the U.S. market,” said Omar Khan, chief strategy officer for Samsung Mobile. The Galaxy Indulge is loaded with the speed of the Android OS, true mobile broadband connectivity and a 1GHz processor with rich multimedia features for premium movie and TV content.”
MetroPCS touts $50 and $60 4G LTE smartphone service plans, which include all applicable taxes and regulatory fees. You get unlimited talk, text and 4G LTE Web page browsing, along with data access to streaming audio, video and gaming content, downloads and Android applications. The phone itself costs $399 a little higher than most smartphones out there but MetroPCS doesnt force you to sign a contract to get the deal.
As just about every carrier floats the term 4G these days, MetroPCS says its trying to set itself apart with its customer-experience and handset focus.
MetroPCS has gone about deploying 4G its own way by focusing less on top download speeds,” company spokesperson Drew Crowell told vision2mobile, and more on providing an exceptional experience to consumers on 4G LTE handsets only (Samsung Craft and today, Samsung Galaxy Indulge Android smartphone). MetroPCS LTE networks deliver performance and throughput that are consistent with the LTE standard and what weve seen across the industry. MetroPCS is distinctive in that it has deployed 4G LTE in existing spectrum holding spanning AWS and PCS bands and its handsets offer support for both bands. Lastly, MetroPCS is the only no-contract provider that is currently delivering 4G LTE service.”
